The Elements of Innovation Discovered

Sandvik is adding industrial math power

Metal Tech News – November 16, 2022

Polymathian will bolster Sandvik's automated and battery-electric mining solutions.

In yet another move to bolster its digital mining technologies division, Sandvik has cut a deal to acquire Polymathian Industrial Mathematics, an Australia-based provider of advanced mine optimization software and services.

Founded in 2013 by a trio of mathematicians and operations researchers, Polymathian leverages its world-leading expertise in industrial mathematics, simulation, machine learning, and statistical analysis to solve complex problems faced by industrial industries.

The Australian tech company's team of innovators, software engineers and mathematicians have developed operational efficiency solutions for the energy, mining, rail, and marine transport sectors, as well as for supply chains spanning multiple industries.

Several of the world's largest mining companies already use Polymathian optimization and simulation software for mine extraction, material flow, energy and fuel consumption, and maintenance efficiency.

"With the acquisition of Polymathian we continue to broaden our offering to enhance productivity in our mining customers' value chain," said Sandvik President and CEO Stefan Widing.

Polymathian's automation and process optimization solutions complement the digital automation software platform offered by Deswik, a world-leading mine planning software company acquired by Sandvik in April.

Further details on Sandvik's agreement to acquire Deswik can be read at Sandvik adds Deswik software expertise in the December 8, 2021 edition of Metal Tech News.

"Polymathian's automated decision-making and process optimization, together with Deswik's software tools for planning and managing production, represent a unique combination in the market," Widing said.

As the newest addition to the digital mining technologies division of Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, Polymathian's unique skillset and platform is expected to accelerate the Swedish mining equipment and technology company's development of battery electric equipment, AutoMine automation, and other optimization solutions for the mining sector.

"Polymathian is a great addition to Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, and enables SMR to now have a unique digital portfolio that will help our customers to optimize their data driven operations across the value chain and ensure their mine design is fully compatible with technologies like AutoMine and BEVs," said Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions President Mats Eriksson.

Polymathian will be a part of Business Unit Deswik and remain original equipment manufacturer agnostic, which means its solutions will continue to be compatible across brands and sectors.
